New Zealand Geographic
There is a website that can be accessed for schools for the NZ Geographic. Have a look. Not sure if it can only be accessed within school or at home too.

Fantastic descriptive writing from the Navigators 11,12,13
What lurks beyond the window
The girl, who was rather curious, had always wondered what was beyond her bedroom window. Every morning when she woke up she ran to the window and gazed out at the view, but was disappointed to find that it was still the same boring old viewshe saw yesterday.
Trees scattered along the hill, the cloudless blue sky, houses built here and over there. One day she just couldn't resist it any longer. The girl slipped downstairs and out the front door. Then she ran until her legs couldn't carry her any longer. And that was when she discovered wht lurked behind the window. Candyfloss streaks filled the sky with beauty, trees covered from top to bottom in blossom, water as clear as glass. She was truly in paradise.

A golden labrador gazed at the beautiful landscape, rolling hills and a calm sea with islands dotted around. The sky was a pale blue with wisps of clouds in the distance. From the rocky outcrop he stood on, he could see everything. He rolled his head to one side and spotted a small village. He could just see the cars crawling along the narrow roads. The unrelenting sun was scorching his back, making him feel sleepy and desperate for water. Lush green fields stretched as far as the eye could see. He had never known there was this much green in the whole world.

The scattered houses destroy the view from the lush green hills. Plonked right in front is a yellow building. Lines of silver on it turn the view into cubes.
Children run like wild animals feeling freedom. Some children are inside working their brains like an engine powering a car.

Matariki Resources for Class
http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/maorifoodskaimaori/page
Purpose : To identify how Māori were able to supply food through the winter to feed a number of
people at times such as Matariki.
Task 1: Brainstorm in a small group:
Where does most of the food you eat come
from?
Eg. Garden, supermarket, fishing…
● How is food preserved today so we
can eat a range of food during the
winter months? Eg. Summer fruits and
vegetables
● How is this food stored?
Make a list of how your food is stored.
Fill out the chart provided.( Fig 1 )
Check at home to make sure you have
included a number of different ways of
preserving food.
- Create a flow chart which identifies foods
matched with some of the methods used to preserve and store food
Eg.Kumera >>>dried kumera>>>> pits
3)a.Choose a particular food and illustrate
how it was traditionally gathered, preserved
and stored, ready for a celebration such as
Matariki.
b.Compare this with the same food now and
show its path from gathering/harvesting to
the table. ( See Fig 1 and Fig 2 ) in class
Eg. This could be a fish or shellfish, eggs,
meats.
● How are the practices similar?
● How are they different?
This page describes the methods used by Māori to store
and preserve their food for the winter.

This excellent web series is produced by Ngāi Tahu. It
explains in eleven, 10 minute episodes some of their
traditional practices in gathering, harvesting preserving
and preparing food.

We have now had two weeks of competition and the teams are definitely showing our school values of doing their personal best and respect. It has been great to see so many of parents and extended family down their cheering them on. Under 11's Team C coached by Tracey Allsopp and managed by Nicky Howell have sent a team photo for our blog. This was on the first day of competition.

Isabella's Axel
Isabella, our wonderful girl with the growth mindset has just managed to do an axel in ice skating. She set it as a goal at the beginning of Term 1 and has worked hard on it and never given up. Great rewards come to those who persevere. Hearty congratulations Isabella, you are a star.
Star Wars Activities
The Student Council Spirit Committee did a great job of organising Star Wars activities for our children. Here are some photos of them working on the art activities.
